Mobile Baby

Filed under: Kalven — sean @ 9:00 am

I have mentioned before that Kalven is trying hard to be mobile.  He is.  Over the past week or so he has finally gotten the movements together and can crawl to anywhere he wants to go.  He can turn, go forward or backward.  He is a fully mobile baby, although he is still slow.  Thankfully.

Our house is still pretty much baby proof from when Leif was just starting to explore, but we have gotten lazy with the baby gates.  Leif is pretty good about behaving when he is alone on a level and he mastered stairs a long time ago.  Kalven is a different story.  Kalven is working on getting to a sitting position when he is on his belly, he can do it sometimes.  Kalven is also trying to pull himself up to a standing position, again sometimes he can do it but his legs need a little work.  But at the rate this kid is going I will be writing about how he is crawling the stairs and walking the furniture in a couple weeks.

Kalven seems to have taken a little break from the teething thing, but I think it’s almost over.  There are some bumps that look like they are getting bigger and he gets cranky at the end of the day.

Leif And Ayris

Filed under: Ayris, Leif — sean @ 12:31 pm

Aleece and I try to get together with friends as much as possible. We love getting kids together and watching them play, we even sometimes engage in some adult conversation. On one of the recent get-together Ayris and the rest of her family came over to play with Leif, and probably secondary to play with Kalven and lastly us adults. Ayris and Leif had a great time.

The drew some art,

showed off belly buttons,

and played camp-out.

We had to constantly remind the kids to use their indoor voices because they were screaming so much. The thing that lead to most of the screaming was some cloth flower thingies. It was a lot of fun to tickle each other with them.

It’s great to get together with friends.

This Is What Happens When…

Filed under: Kalven, Leif, The boys — sean @ 12:20 pm

This is what happens when you feed a baby lots of food and keep awake and playing long past his bedtime.

You turn your back for just a min. and he goes all quiet.  He was so tired that when I picked him out of there he barley moved.

This is what happens when you turn your back on the older one and he is feeling adventurous.

He will climb into the crib of your younger one and wake him to play.  Then when you get the camera out to take some pictures he will shove his younger brother out of the way so that he can have some solo shots.

This is what happens when a baby gets excited about crawling.

He will get up on his hands and knees then sometimes when he tries to move froward he uses so much energy that he just pops up on his tippy-toes.  Other times he just can not get the rhythm down and ends up moving backwards.

Leif Starts School

Filed under: Leif — sean @ 12:08 pm

Leif has not progressed very much on his speech, he can talk and he does say sentiences but not English. It has not been a huge concern but we did not want him to be held back so Aleece and I decided that a call to the school district was in order.

The school district did say that it is not uncommon for someone Leif’s age to not talk much but he should be progressing and they scheduled a evaluation. In reality it was like 4 evaluations, they come out to the house 4 different times and gave mounds of paperwork to fill out. On Monday March 17 we had the case worker, speech therapist, and teacher come to the house. Leif did meet the criteria to be eligible for early developmental classes. He scored basically normal in everything except speech and cognitive abilities. The cognitive score was low probably because he had a hard time understanding what the teacher wanted him to do. The evaluator did make a comment that it was good that Leif could get us to understand him in other non-verbal ways and that shows that his cognitive score was most likely hampered by his inability to understand language.

So the short of it is that on April 14 Leif will start school. He will have to get a little backpack and will be riding the bus to school on Mondays and Fridays for 2.5 hours in the afternoon. He will attend classes for a year then go through re-evaluation to see if he needs more. This should be fun, I will post 1st day-of-school pictures as soon as I get them.

Nothing This Kid Doesn’t Like

Filed under: Kalven — sean @ 10:08 am

Kalven is really taking to this eating thing.  Take a look at this album of him taking over an apple.

Kalven_apple

One afternoon Aleece was eating an apple and Kalven was really interested in it.  He would not take his eyes off of it.  So Aleece thought she would see what he would do if he could get at the apple.  To Aleece’s surprise Kalven just dug in, and not only that he also hung on to the apple for dear life.  Leif even wanted in on the apple, and Kalven did let him in to take a bite but Kalven never let go.

Now remember, Kalven only has 2 bottom teeth, that’s it.  But with those 2 teeth he was scraping bits off and eating it up.  I am glad I was home that day to get the pictures.

Boys Like To Wrestle

Filed under: Kalven, Leif, The boys — sean @ 10:02 am

I don’t wrestle with the boys yet, not because I think it’s too violent but because I am too big and don’t want to crush them.  But that does not stop the two of them from wrestling.

Like any match you have to start out being nice.

Then start in with your moves.

I think Kalven was a little stunned at the outcome.

To the victor goes the spoils!

Happy St. Patty’s Day

Filed under: Kalven, Leif, The boys — sean @ 10:02 am

This will be a picture post, got a few cute ones on Monday, St. Patty’s Day.

Here we are getting ready

Kalven sitting on the couch.

Here are both boys posing, Kalven still falls over when he gets excited.

Leif wanted to feed Kalven his first St. Patty’s Day supper.  Too bad Kalven is still too young for corned beef and cabbage or Irish stew!

It was a fun day.  Nothing special, just a nice normal fun day.

My Sons Favorite Toy Right Now Is Oatmeal

Filed under: Leif — sean @ 7:36 am

Yes oatmeal. But he does not play with it while he is eating at the table. He plays with it on the floor in a plastic bin.

Aleece went out and bought some plastic stackable bins for Leif toys. At the same time she had this bright idea to pick up some oatmeal. Aleece put some oatmeal in one of the bins along with some little plastic animals. Leif plays in there for the longest time, the oatmeal is like a surrogate sand. We all know how much kids LOVE to play in sand, the oatmeal has the same effect. It’s also really easy to clean up.

Leif and I will play in that bin and sometimes we even use the plastic animals. I have to admit, it really is fun to just play with the oatmeal like it is sand.

Leif’s Tent

Filed under: Leif — sean @ 7:23 pm

On Monday Aleece moved a few things around. There was a table and chairs in the boys room that was not getting used so she moved it downstairs. Then she took some other stuff downstairs and moved it around and brought more toys out and, well whatever that’s not the point. The point is she made some room in the boys bedroom and broke out their play tent. This is a tent that is small, it’s a 2 toddler or 0.5 adult tent.

Leif was having a ball playing in the tent, he had Aleece get in with him and brought in a bunch of stuffed animals to play. Mostly he just sat and laughed at how much fun it was to be in a tent in the house. I was working from home that day and I could hear all the laughing on the downstairs monitor, well I just had to go look. It was really cute.

A little while later it was nap time. Aleece came down and told me that when it was all quiet I had to go look at Leif. Here is what I saw…

I guess he decided that the fun should not stop even though he had to take a nap.

Kalven Invents A Rocking Chair

Filed under: Kalven — sean @ 5:28 am

Random cute photo of Kalven.

Ok, that’s not enough for a blog post so I will write more.

The reason I finally posted a blog about Kalven wriggling out of his car seat was because last week he was sitting in his car seat rocking away.

You can click on the slideshow to view the album. He kept reaching for the toy and would rock forward and back, forward and back. At times he would just rock on his own and not reach for any toy.
